Opening Session: Relationships That Hurt

Thankfully, our collective awareness of the prevalence of abuse has never been higher. And yet, the impact of abuse is difficult to quantify, not only because of its comprehensive devastation, but also because it leaves a unique fingerprint of destruction on each of its victims. How can we better comprehend the nuanced contours of abuse, including the disconnection it creates, in a way that helps us become more informed and curious about survivors of abuse?

Jon Sovocool

Little Ones and Millstones: A Theological Famework for Protecting Children and Abuse Survivors

Counselors, ministry personnel, and abuse advocates all work to protect potential victims and to repair the harm done to children and adult abuse survivors. Jesus’ care for children provides a clear and compelling framework for the task of protecting the vulnerable and working for healing for those who have been harmed.

Abuse in the Home: How Domestic Violence May Present in the Home

Counselors, chaplains, and ministers all encounter individuals in the midst of traumatic events, or in the next few hours that follow. How trauma care starts often sets a trajectory for ongoing work with traumatized individuals. Thus, what a caregiver says and does in those first few hours or days can be crucial to the overall process of trauma recovery. What are the kinds of goals that caregivers are working toward when they provide trauma care? And, to be effective in their work, what are kinds of things that caregivers should and should not do when working with newly traumatized individuals?

A Donkey’s Tale: “Four Strong Legs”

The ministry of rescuing those who have been abused is not for the faint of heart. Directing them down a path leading to complete wholeness is quite challenging. At times, it can even be heart wrenching and exhausting and requires proficiency, long-term commitment, and unwavering dedication.

The parable of The Good Samaritan skillfully, yet subtly, illustrates this demanding process. While exploring this parable, typically the crucial role of the benevolent traveler’s donkey is overlooked. This lowly beast of burden gives us four crucial ministry principles (Four Strong Legs). When they are kept healthy and strong, they enable the caregiver to be effective, resilient, and empower them to achieve longevity in ministry.

3:00—4:00pm Closing

Closing Session: Relationships That Help

Summary: Survivors of abuse have wisely learned to protect themselves in relationships. Learning to work with a client’s protection is one of the most critical factors in determining the success or failure of therapy. How can we anticipate, understand, and honor the function of this protection? And just as importantly, how can we become more aware of what happens to us when we attempt to work within an abuse survivor’s window of tolerance?
